REUNIONS

1957 'Get Together'

On September 12th 2009 fourteen seventy year olds gathered at The Riverside Terrace Cafe situated under the Royal Festival Hall in London. Being a little worried about recognizing each other after up to 56 years we put a blazer, kindly loaned by the school second hand clothes' store, on a chair back but all was well--we really had not changed at all, or had we? Appearances may have 'increased' but old friends are old friends and we had a lovely time hearing news and remembering previous times, particularly Bridge I think.

Our group consisted of; Leith Boler from Alfred; Anna Belcher, Susan Fairbairn, Sally Fletcher, Judy Hancox and Jill Williams from Brooke Place (Jean Parry, the main instigator of the event, was sadly unable to travel down from Leeds); Jenny Godden from Chaucer Merchants; Frances Goldsworthy, Rosemary Harvey (who invited Hilary Lyndon-Jones) and Maggie Knight from Cranmer; Anne Baxter and Rozel Lattimer from Nightingale, and Cath Collier and Alison Caldicott from Somerville House. We came from Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London, Somerset, Surrey, Sussex, Wiltshire and even Scotland and Canada. We were sorry that others who wanted to come were on holiday, looking after relatives or busy with 'professional' work but it was good to see everyone who came looking so cheerful and well. We think a 2 year gap before the next gathering will be about right so we look forward to seeing everyone then.
We have still 'lost':
Caroline Beaumont, Anne-Marie Fenchelle, Priscilla Hicks, Jo Isaac, Pam Jackson, Gillian Kent, Janet Marks, Sue Rogers, Gillian Sanders, Judy Sisson, Jackie Teakle, Myrle Tilsey Green and also Jenny Turvey, Anne Tunbridge and Dorcas Hadfield who we think went to the Grammar School--and any others? Meeting in London?
For an easy to arrange, informal group you might like to consider 'The Riverside Terrace Cafe' which is alongside and facing the Thames and 'under' The Royal Festival Hall (near Waterloo and Charing Cross Stations). The cafe is huge (you could easily have 30 or more people in a corner without needing reservation other than to ensure its availability) with food, not gourmet but perfectly adequate amidst your groups' chatter, served from a smallish counter in an almost similar way to that which MacDonalds uses to cater for a lot of people, though the menu is different. I think one needs to establish that there is not some big function on your chosen date but for convenience and pleasure it is very good.

50 Year Reunion - 7.7.07, Founders' Day

This was held on 07:07:07, Founders' Day, and consisted of about twenty of Cath Collier's year meeting at School for an Old Girls' picnic on the Lib. Lawn and a wander around the buildings which included viewing an impressive Art Exhibition. We were also very interested to be taken around Brooke Place, much changed, and Brabourne.
We followed this with an early evening meal at the nearby Holiday Inn where we were joined by our three P.E. staff, Bridget Horton (Mrs Lendrum), Sheila Bull (Mrs Palmer) and Doreen Abbott (Mrs Cole) and we received good wishes from Maureen Knox-Johnston and Joan Bryant-Salmon (Mrs Duncan). It was great fun and it is especially good to hear that several people who were 'found' are meeting up with such long-ago friends. I really do recommend that other years also aim for 50 year reunions; we found over 50 people and would love to find the remaining 14 or so. The O.G.A. can always help with some contacts if you decide to 'have-a-go'."

LONDON LUNCHEON AT QUAGLINO'S  - November 2007

The Quaglino's luncheon has become one of the highlights of my time in London (now that I live in SW France) and this year was no exception. We had 47 "girls" attending which was terrific, and lots of young ones.....(that's you in your late twenties and early thirties I'm talking about!). I am so pleased that the original idea is really working and we are getting girls who live and work in London coming along to a "School" event, so please keep it up Modume, Nicola and company. It is great for us to hear about life in the City etc. This year we slightly cheated too by asking mothers to bring their daughters....mine was very pleased to see some old faces she recognised as until now I think she has been the only daughter attending. So the Reader girls, (I know you were all forced to come by Mary and then ended up really enjoying yourselves!) we hope to see all or some of you on November 15th 2008. Thank you to all the other mothers who played ball....the sceptical can only be convinced by dragging them along it seems. And we were happy to see so many "big seniors" on Mary's table, 10 of you in one go, wow. Thank you all for coming....Di Leaver, Jo Halley and all you others. Thank you to everyone who supports this and I look forward to seeing you all in the Autumn. So BOOK EARLY, as the man said, the room really can only hold 45 comfortably. I would like to thank my "added at the last minute table-for-two" companion Jo-an for all her diligence providing lists and getting you all to sign in, a great help to me who could thus "mingle" for once. Even so, the day ended and Rae Sasson and I once again said..."well, we'll talk on the 'phone tomorrow". Carolyn C
